West in Civil War Essay The contribution of the Western states in Civil War outcome are argued to be significant and crucial as Delaware, West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri and Maryland has done their best to make the country free from slavery. Delaware supported the Confederacy, Kentucky and Missouri also pro-Union and pro-Confederate government fractions. Historians argue that the Western states with their favorable social, political connections were critical to the war outcome and slavery abolishment. Most of the Western states adopted Jim Crow law and worked towards slavery abolishment. During the Civil War the General Assembly of Delaware rejected secession, as well as Maryland. The year of 1863 appeared to play important role for Maryland as the state adopted new constitution that prohibited slavery, slavery. Thus, slaves were emancipated in the state. After Missouri rejected secession, the newly elected government called for authorization of a state constitutional convention. Missouri approved convention and voted for remaining within the Union, but it opposed coercion of the Southern States. (Monaghan, 1955) Further, Kentucky is argued to contribute to strategic victory in the Civil War, and Lincoln once announced that to loose Kentucky was the same as to be defeated in the Civil War. The importance of Kentucky laid in the fact that the state hold Maryland and Missouri committed to the West. In the beginning Kentucky tended to remain neutral and in 1861 the state asked for keeping out the war. However, the neutrality was broken when General Polk made an attempt to occupy Kentucky openly enlisting troops. Kentucky had to respond and state’s government passed resolution to demand evacuation of Confederate forces from state’s territory. (Coulter, 1926) Summing up, the contribution of the West was significant for the Civil War outcome as the state supported war against the slavery and slave discrimination. Despite initial attempts to remain neutral, Western states realized that only victory would bring relative peace. Ghost Story of the Kingsville Haunted House Essay examples -- Ghost St

Kingsville Haunted House The teller is 24 years old, and works for the state department of education. Originally, he was from the Baltimore area where he attended an elementary Catholic school. He moved to Bell Air in second grade and grew up there. After his parents separated, he moved back to Baltimore to live with his grandparents, and has remained in Baltimore ever since. The sister he mentions in the story moved away to China years ago. A weekend or two ago, he, I, and a few other friends spent the evening in one of our favorite hang-out spots in Columbia, Pub Dog. It was there, sitting in our dimly lit booth, over some beers that I heard him tell this story from his childhood. He spoke in a strangely matter-of-fact tone, considering the weirdness of the story he was telling, and in a smooth, comfortable manner that seemed to indicate he had told the story many times before. Here is the story he told: Ok. One night my sister and I were at my father’s house. He lives in Kingsville on 10 maybe 9 acres of land in this [small pause, looks at ceiling] I wouldn’t really call it a farmhouse, just a kind of small house out there. The previous person who lived in the house was supposedly shipped to an asylum, for, you know, normal stuff [pause] schizophrenic or something. My sister and I were at the house one night and we were cleaning up the house while my dad was on some sort of job out of the state and my step mom was at work in the hospital. We were doing our stuff, and then the power flickered, and came back on. We didn’t think anything of it. Then, outside of the door, we heard a noise, kinda like a dog barking, but like, just enough not so that we knew it wasn’t. So, we hear this noise, and start to get fre... ...g age. â€Å"Young children idolize their parents and draw strength from closeness to them.† (Nichols, 190). As soon as my friend and his sister were near to their father, they felt safe, and things returned to normal. This story, although somewhat unique in its exact plot, contains many elements that make it a typical and traditional ghost story. A Study of Spirituality in the Workplace

What is your definition of spirituality in the workplace? Spirituality in the workplace means that employees find nourishment for both the vertical and horizontal dimensions of their spirituality at work. Spirituality in the Workplace is about individuals and organizations seeing work as a spiritual path, as an opportunity to grow and to contribute to society in a meaningful way. It is about care, compassion and support of others; about integrity and people being true to them and others. It means individuals and organizations attempting to live their values more fully in the work they do.The author says that's expression of spirituality in the workplace can be both humanistic and orientated toward performance. Do you agree why or why I want not? I believe that the expression of spirituality in the workplace is both humanistic and orientated toward performance because personal stability, centeredness, and self-actualization can be spiritually based ways to adapt to an often chaoticall y changing work environment. These spiritual expressions provide the realization that stability, centeredness, and self-actualization are sourced from our inner selves, particularly since individual organizational members often perceive that they have little control of their workplace environment or the people in it.The author describes a number of â€Å"expressions as very spirituality† in the workplace. What are the additional expressions of spirituality do you believe are significant in the workplace? Such expressions may involve dedicating time for meditation, introspection, enjoying nature, journaling, or sharing with a trusted friend. Additionally, studying scripture, prayer groups, prayer before meetings and spiritual work retreats.In addition to the establishment on the Ecumenical Council, what are other ways to help create an integrated approach to spirituality in the workplace? Here are some other ways to integrate spirituality: Frequency and types of daily prayers in the workplace. Dress code inclusive of cultural and religious attire. Ecumenical meditation room(s). Religious prayer room(s). Policy on proselytizing in the workplace. Ways to foster equitable inclusion of atheists, agnostics, spiritualists, and religious personnel. Ways to foster greater integrative performance, productivity, and employee well-being through religious and philosophical (i.e., Taoism and Buddhism) differences.What responsibility does the employer have to accommodate employee’s religious/spiritual beliefs? Managers should identify policies pertaining to spiritual expression at the workplace. For example, an organization should be clear about its policies about religious proselytizing. Such activities should not interfere with work nor offend other workers who may not be interested. Managers also should engage in discussions with employees about how an equitable religious holiday policy might be defined, including those people who are not religious.Finally, managers should discuss ways to accommodate spiritually guided preferences about clothing, religious symbols, and food (Page 212). What responsible he does the employee have in his/her attempt to be proactive in this accommodation? For example, employees should request an accommodation for religious activities or holidays as soon as possible; they should explain what accommodation is needed, and suggest ways in which the accommodation might be accomplished while still meeting workplace responsibilities and obligations (Pg,211).When, do you believe, does bracing one religious and/or spiritual beliefs in the workplace go to far? In other words, when does expressing one’s religion become exclusive rather than inclusive? I believe that when specific religion and/or belief system does not allow anyone to join and share their same beliefs this religion/and or belief system excludes people from joining their group and belief system.
